Salinas Valley Bike Trail

May 31, 2010

I’ve had this thought for a while now about a Salinas Valley Bike Trail or path. It could either follow the Salinas River or Hwy 101 or possibly the wine corridor along River Rd. and then on to the Salinas Valley cities of Soledad, Greenfield, King City. On the northern end it would connect with the Monterey bike trail along the coast. So you could do an all day ride from say King City to Monterey and back or Monterey to King City and back. Those valley winds going north in the afternoon would really test your cycling skills. This path could be used by walkers, runners, dog walkers etc. much like the path in Monterey and Pacific Grove.

Construction of this project would take cooperation between private and public landowners and frankly money and in this economic environment that’s hard to come by. I think if all the cycling access groups got together and put some energy into this the access issues could be taken care of and a fund-raising campaign could then start for construction.

This would be a long-term project with short-term goals starting at say where the Marina bike trail connects on the Reservation rd and going south from there as money and  access became available over several years. As cyclists in the Monterey area I think we have to help make our own future. Give me your thoughts.
