Facial Recognition Versus Foursquare and Gowalla

July 20, 2010

Mark Cuban recently wrote in his blog here that he had invested in a company that uses facial recognition software to see who is in an area or a business. He says this will be the end of checking in on apps such as Foursquare or Gowalla. This software will use the Facebook database of faces and names and contact information to provide facial recognition and give you the option to opt out. I think a lot of people will be against this from a privacy standpoint however some will use it. Many people complain about privacy concerns yet put everything on Fourquare, Gowalla, and Facebook. Currently there is some privacy backlash against Facebook and it’s having to look at how it’s handling it’s users concerns and changing some company policies. So how this type of product comes in will be interesting to see if it creates the backlash or people embrace it. I see why stores or ¬†businesses want it they can then get metrics on their customers like a website does. Things like how many people walked in the door today versus how many bought something etc, kind of like the club card information without having the club card.
