Cal Sports Loses By Five

September 29, 2010

Cal has made the decision to cut its intercollegiate athletic programs. Cal has decided to get rid of men’s and women’s gymnastics, baseball, men’s rugby, and women’s lacrosse. These are far-reaching cuts that affect approximately one hundred sixty student athletes and 13 coaches. These programs will be discontinued at the end of the current year. All student athletes that elect to transfer due to these cuts will not be required to take a year off of competition due to NCAA rules governing cuts such as these.

The budget cuts in higher education have far-reaching effects and it’s hard to field a lacrosse team when you are at the same time trying to figure out how to give financial aid to low-income students. The numbers just don’t add up and cuts have to come from somewhere. Still with all of these cuts which are terrible for these athletes for there athletic and college careers Cal still offers more sports programs than most public universities.
